** 2021 Notts Fell Championships - CANCELLED **

It is with regret and after much deliberation that I have decided to cancel the Notts AAA County Fell Championships for 2021. The host race, Longshaw Sheepdog Trials fell race on 4th September is still going ahead with an entry limit of 200 and can be found at:

 https://racesignup.co.uk/site/event.php?eventid=221

The decision is due to the continuing uncertainties regarding Covid 19 and as such, I must put the health and welfare of the small and dedicated team of volunteers - without whom the fell champs each year would not happen - ahead of holding a championships this year.

I know this will be a disappointment for many; however, there are plenty more years for the fell championships, and in due course, I will make it known what the arrangements for the Notts fell champs 2022 will be toward the end of this year.

Thank you for your understanding and best wishes and good luck for your continuing running endeavours.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  1. Circumstances may change later in the year and the race may not be allowed to take place.
  2. In the event that Longshaw is cancelled, it is unlikely there will be a replacement host race, and the NFRC for 2021 will be cancelled.
  3. It is likely that guidance in covid safety will be provided by the race organiser (and this may change with the situation at the time). Race day details will include covid guidance and some measures may include bringing your own pen to complete registration, bringing personal hand sanitiser, and maintaining social distancing and other behaviours. Nearer the time, the situation regarding how post-race presentations can take place may also become clearer. All this information will be posted on the Notts AAA website but could be subject to rapid changes - apologies in advance if this happens and thanks for your forbearance.
  4. All competitors in the NFRC are expected to have read, understood and comply with the Fell Runners Association’s “Runners Rules” and this is a condition of entry of FRA licensed races  https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/documents/2021/FRA%20Requirements%20for%20Runners%202021%20-%2024-08-2020.pdf and https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/documents/2021/FRA%20-%20Summary%20of%20rule%20changes%20for%202021%20-%2024-08-2020.pdf and the FRA principles of fell running https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/documents/2021/FRA%20Principles%20of%20Fell%20Running%202021%20-%2024-08-2020.pdf
  5. The NFRC are open to all Nottinghamshire born runners or through residency in Nottinghamshire for the 9 months prior to the race provided that the runner has not competed in any other county’s championships e.g. a Derby resident but who is Notts born could race in either championships but only in one county’s events for that race season for all events e.g. fell, road, track, XC etc. - you can’t mix and match events in different counties!
  6. In a race ‘starved’ year, particularly of county championships, there may be runners - some of whom could be very talented - with little experience of fell running, that might be interested in taking part in the NFRC. Fell running has a long history and tradition, a growing number of participants, and is one of the few sports where you can line up at the start next to an English or British champion, or GB international (and have a pint or eat cake with them in the village hall after the race!), yet it is still very much a niche sport - albeit a great one. Fell racing requires the ability to run over technically difficult underfoot conditions (usually requiring specialist fell running shoes) and (often!) in poor weather conditions that may demand race organisers to mandate runners to carry appropriate  and specific clothing and other kit, and in some races, the ability to navigate the course. Anyone wishing to race in the NFRC please consult the FRA documents above and also the FRA FAQ for beginners https://fellrunner.org.uk/FAQ-for-beginners.php , and gain some experience by training in fell terrain with club mates and by entering some lower category fell races listed in the FRA race calendar https://www.fellrunner.org.uk/races.php

Best wishes for your fell and hill running over the spring and summer,

Dicky Wilkinson

  • Close to each race date please check the Notts AAA website and that of each race for information regarding race cancellation – especially so for Wolf’s Pit in March when weather is unpredictable and conditions on the hill could deteriorate rapidly forcing race abandonment.

OTHER KEY POINTS

Please remember that you enter all races at your own risk. It is an FRA requirement that all competitors in fell races have read, understand and comply with the runners rules (see link below).

Bring full kit as described in the FRA link below to all races and be expected to carry it – this is mandatory for Wolf’s Pit but usually not required for races 2 and 3 BUT STILL BRING KIT TO THESE.

In the event of failure to carry appropriate kit throughout a race this will lead to race and championship disqualification. Kit checks occur before and at the end of races.

Kit:

  • Waterproof top with attached hood and taped seams
  • Waterproof leggings with taped seams
  • Hat and gloves
  • Map to navigate the course; silva type compass; and whistle
  • Food
  • Wear clothes suitable for the conditions. In 2018 Wolf’s Pit was cancelled due to deep snow and cold conditions – in March weather conditions can turn for the worse quickly, don’t skimp on kit and be prepared. It is not necessary to wear club vests but if conditions allow then that would be welcome. These are fell races so studded fell type running shoes are advised.

  • Races are all entry on the day except Wolf’s Pit which is online pre-entry. On race day pay and register at the race desk (or after number collection at Wolf’s Pit) then go to the Notts desk with your number and fill in a race day form for the Notts championships with no additional race fee.

  • Results will appear on the race website, FRA website results section and on the Notts AAA website. The championship results will be compiled from each races results and scores after race 1 and then race 1 and 2 combined will be placed on the Notts AAA website – this may take some time as it is dependent on how quickly race results are processed and made available by the race organisers – thanks in advance for being patient!

  • Individual and team medals will be presented after the Longshaw Sheepdog Trial race – it may take a little while to compile the results from all races so again, thanks in advance for being patient while the small band of volunteers process the results. Go and enjoy the sheep dog trials, homemade produce, real ale and café at the show before the presentation!
